Where Else Can Paramedics Work

Date:
By  John Venning

The Australian Institute of Paramedic Practitioners (AIPP) is the leading professional advocacy group committed to advancing paramedic practitioners and community paramedics in Australia.  AIPP promotes paramedics with additional skills in primary healthcare to improve and enhance health delivery in communities in rural, remote, and urban areas.

Where can paramedics with advanced skills work?

Traditionally paramedics have mostly just worked for state ambulance services, however, the role of the paramedic is rapidly expanding to include many new areas.  Paramedics with additional training in primary healthcare can work in a wide variety of roles within and outside of jurisdictional ambulance services.  Some of the roles include:

  1. Extended care paramedic
  2. Community paramedic
  3. Paramedic practitioner
  4. Music event paramedic
  5. Sporting and arena paramedic
  6. Flight paramedic (private organisations and ambulance services)
  7. Hospice and palliative care paramedic
  8. Primary care paramedic working in GP clinics
  9. Mental health paramedics working as co-responders
  10. Military paramedic
  11. Offshore paramedic
  12. Industrial and construction paramedic
  13. Mine site paramedic
  14. Police, custodial paramedic
  15. Prison service paramedic
  16. Private ambulance paramedic
  17. Urgent care paramedic
  18. Retrieval paramedic
  19. Remote expedition paramedic
  20. Film and tv set location paramedic
  21. Governing bodies advisor paramedic
  22. Triage paramedic (private companies and ambulance services)
  23. Aged care facility paramedic
  24. Cruise ship and super yacht paramedic
  25. Private client paramedic
  26. Schools and universities paramedic
  27. Accommodation camp paramedic
  28.  Airports and aviation paramedic
  29. Marine rescue service paramedic
  30. Rehabilitation paramedic
  31. Telehealth/telemedicine paramedic
  32. NGO and humanitarian paramedic
  33. Special operations and tactical paramedic
  34. Hospital and emergency department paramedic (especially in small rural hospitals)
  35. Healthcare administration manager

There are already many paramedics working in these diverse roles leading the reform of the traditional paramedic role, both in Australia and overseas.  Significant progress has been made in countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, and USA.  In December 2023, the UK government passed legislation that allows for independent prescribing of certain medications by paramedic practitioners.

Challenges do remain, such as prescribing rights and Medicare provider approval for Australian paramedics, and the Australian Institute of Paramedic Practitioners (AIPP) are continuing to push for these changes at a federal and state level.
